As a child who grew up in the standard Taiwanese education system, English conversation has been a nightmare not only for me but also for most people. However, breaking this nightmare is something that can only be achieved by confronting it head-on ourselves. From a young age, reading and writing in English have been the most emphasized aspects in school because the entrance exams focus solely on these two parts. Over time, our reading and writing skills have become much better than our listening and speaking skills. For instance, we can understand certain words, but when we hear them or try to say them, we may not be able to react quickly because we've never heard those words before and don't know how to pronounce them. This situation has caused me to be afraid and lack confidence in listening to and speaking with others. This is an undeniable truth. For example, when I traveled to Kyoto, a foreigner in the youth hostel asked me in the elevator, "Where are you from?" I replied, "Taiwan!" And then... there was nothing else. Now, thinking back, I should have asked them where they were from and why they were there. But at that time, due to my psychological barrier to speaking English, I didn't have the courage to continue the conversation. This made me lose an opportunity to make friends and learn about foreign cultures. This matter has stayed in my mind for a long time. I feel it's a pity to miss these opportunities, and I realize I should focus on listening and speaking. When I can understand and express my thoughts fluently, I will be able to chat with foreign friends without any barriers and even apply it in my work environment. In short, the purpose of learning English or any other language is not to pass exams but to communicate. As someone who has never studied abroad and struggles with English, I have to seek resources, create a learning environment, and practice continuously to prevent these regrettable situations from happening again. I like Yoyo because the teacher will immediately note down what you say, give feedback like having a conversation, and then review whether your sentences are correct and how to say them more naturally. Overall, you won't be just constantly corrected; you will also hear the teacher share interesting experiences. This method is, in my opinion, the best. It’s also one of the ways I judge whether a teacher is good or not. You are not just outputting; the teacher will also provide knowledge and views on any topic. Additionally, the small class size of 1-4 people allows you to continuously speak English during the 50-minute class.
